LOCAL MUSIC
TUNE ME ON: DJ Shambala
Name: DJ Shambala (Andrew Concha)
Base of operation: Sarasota
Formed: 1997
Style: Deep House
Bio: His character modeled on peaceful Buddhist "Shambhala" teachings, Colombian Concha's personal mixes are flavored with electronic Latin samples such as classical guitar pickings, echo-y vocals and midtempo beats.
He picked up vinyl, turntables, keyboards, soundboards and computer software after a roommate abandoned them, and taught himself to craft and splice sounds. As Khrome Nightclub's resident event coordinator and DJ, he mainly spins what others want to hear, flowing hip-hop, krunk, trance, progressive and all manner of funky electronic breaks and beats to crowds' moods.
Quote: "In America, there is a lot of culture that is still underground, I believe, all the way from the indie bands to DJs. I don't understand still, you have to pay five bucks to come in and listen to the same music that is in your car, inside."
Shows: Khrome Nightclub White Party (wear white), 10 p.m. Saturday, 1120 N. Washington Blvd., Sarasota $5. 366-5545, www.sarasotakhrome.com.
